"God is a gentleman"
-Lyne Fife
My beautiful sister said this to me one day and I stopped and said I have to write that down. I later went and wrote down "what is a gentleman"?
My answer started with Webster's definition of Gentleman
"A man who treats other people in a proper or polite way"
I always go back to a words true meaning so I can then asses my 'perceived meaning' because I realize my life experiences can create it's very own definition.
This week sisters, I want to encourage you to write down the attributes
of a gentleman. Not just the actions of a gentleman but HIS potential
motivation for displaying the actions.
For example: A Gentleman “Opens doors for me as a courtesy as an
expression of his respect, kindness towards me.”
Now place God in the context of each ‘attribute’. If “God is a gentleman” He will open
doors for you to show His kindness towards you. It wouldn’t be kind or
gentleman like for God to ‘open a door’ and push you through it.
Have you ever been walking and you took a moment to realize someone one
was holding the door for you? I have! My response is always a lil hurried
shuffle and a “I’m sorry about that, thank you so much.” Please pardon the following assumptions but I'm going to go out on a limb and say
We all do it. We all
have also complained, at some point, about how ‘men aren’t gentleman anymore’. I'm going to also risk saying we also may not know how to be a recipient of 'gentleman like' gesture because we
aren’t use to it and it may make us uncomfortable. Finally, before you roll your eyes at me, we also don’t
expect or require men to be gentleman. Which may be why we miss so much of God’s ‘courtesy’ towards us sisters. (Forgive me if any of that was offensive)
I want to encourage you today to re-learn what a GENTLEMAN is by physically writing down what a gentleman does
and his motivations, so you can then begin to SEE GOD appropriately in your lives as
the GENTLEMAN that HE truly IS. The lover of your soul, the listener of your
desires, the comforter in your sorrows, the protector of your heart, the polite
and patient instructor, the teacher in your times of uncertainty and so on and
so on.
If at times you or someone you know can admit that you haven’t always
remembered and appreciated God the ‘gentleman’ than pray this prayer, Father
God, thank you. Thank you heavenly father for your presence. For this reminder
of your perfect and all encompassing power, for being what I need and not what
I want and God for changing my wants.
Thank you God for being a gentleman. For loving me patiently, politely and
perfectly and for your grace as I figure out just how incredible your love is. Thank
you God for being a gentleman, for opening doors and waiting until I realize
you’ve already aligned my next entrance and exit. For discernment, for being
present and for learning and relearning each day what a gentleman feels like in
this earthly realm and God thank you for cleaning my palette so that I may crave
the presence of gentleman and appreciate them when they arrive. In your mighty
name, Amen!
